Fibrosan / MEC SmartPark Development
The DLA Board has become aware of a development at the MEC SmartPark that impacts Diamond Lake and the surrounding area.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) Air Quality Division is holding a public hearing at our request on July 28 at 6 pm via a virtual session.
EGLE is processing a permit for a new fiber-reinforced plastic facility (Fibrosan) at the MEC SmartPark. This new facility will be a major source of hazardous air pollutants and a major source of volatile organic compounds per the EGLE guidelines.
Public comments are being accepted up until July 30, 2026, via a form on the EGLE website.
The DLA is concerned about the potential for individuals, livestock, and crops in our community to be exposed to these hazardous chemicals. As such, we are seeking more information from EGLE about exposure levels, mitigation plans, and ongoing monitoring and testing.
As of this writing, a mitigation technique that could significantly reduce emissions, the use of a Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO), was deemed feasible but is not currently being pursued for economic reasons.
The DLA will continue to share information as it becomes available.
